Finding a good job in Australia is a very competitive process. Even more so if you are a newly arrived migrant or non resident student.There are certain things that one must know. Australia, at the moment, is looking for skilled labour and doesn’t mind if this is from overseas workers because of the lack of local skilled labour. For some time now there has been a shortage of skilled labour, the Australian government wants to bring in people . If you want to be considered a skilled migrant in Australia you must be fluent in english. If you don’t speak english fluently you will find it extremely hard to find a good job. Some major Australian companies include Australia and New Zealand Banking, Coles Myer, Rio Tinto, National Australia Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and BHP Billiton. Some global companies which operate in Australia include Ernst and Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, IBM and KPMG, to name a few. To work as a migrant in these companies you have to be exceptionally skilled, i.e have good credentials and obviously speak fluent english. Overseas work experience for a migrant may be difficult to acknowledge, especially if the employer has never heard of the company before. Many migrants would not have a chance to be offered a job in the companies just mentioned, when they first arrive, instead they may have to settle for a job that pays less and maybe less challenging. This will get them some local experience and may strengthen their chances of being offered a job in a reputable company.

When you become a permanent Australian resident, you will have to make standard tax contributions.The tax bracket is separated into four categories. The higher the category the more tax on your dollar you will pay. For example, if you earn between AUD$35,001 and AUD$80,000 you will be taxed a lump sum of $4,350 and then 30 cents for every dollar over $35,000. If you earn between $80,001 and $180,000 you will have to pay a lump sum of %23,660 plus 40 cents for each dollar over $80,000.If you are a non resident you will have to pay a higher amount of tax.

Qualifications are generally more valued if they were done in Australia, this does not include the Ivy league universities or English universities. The general cost of living in Australia is not expensive based on the salary you should be earning. For those individuals who have managed to get their permanent residency, graduate employment can be achieved easier than obviously not being a resident. However, it would still be intensely competitive for the high end jobs. At the moment, the top industries for graduate recruitment is in accountancy and management. Employers in Australia are interested in graduates who have key skills such as, oral and written communication, time management, initiative and enterprise, and the ability to cope under pressure.

It is very important to know the culture of Australians (the cultural differneces) before going to an interview. For example, at a job interview if in your culture avoiding eye contact is seen as a mark of respect, it isn’t in Australia and could make you look untrustworthy and low in confidence. Hence, if you are a migrant coming from a country whose culture is very different from a western country, you must make sure you do some research on the culture of the country you are going to before you actually land. It can sometimes be the case that a misunderstanding or clash of cultures can be the fall of an interview. Remember, Australian employers do reserve the right to exclude non residents from applying for any job.
